The Brent born Rebecca Spencer has been a rock in goal for Birmingham Ladies not only this season, but in seasons gone by. So here is all you need to know about her.

The 24 year old, as is stated on the official Birmingham Ladies website, joined Arsenal Ladies centre of excellence at just 10 years old after impressing at Watford Ladies (junior level.)

The coaching and training that Spencer would have achieved at Arsenal would have enabled her to fulfill her potential at this young age and despite only being 24 now, she performs like somebody who is much more experienced.

At 14, she represented England for the first time in the junior age groups. Again, this is impressive. She literally had to be the best goalkeeper in England at this age to be a starter and that is exactly what she was. She made that position her own and continued to impress for England throughout the youth age groups.

Despite not looking the tallest, she makes up for this particular attribute with a very loud mouth! The women’s game is a lot quieter than the men’s game in terms of communication. This is just something I have noticed and it is not a criticism in any way, shape or form.

But Spencer stands out as you can hear her from a mile away. This assures the defence and gives a real signal that she is confident in her ability. She has every right to ooze confidence.

Spencer was an integral cog in the Birmingham Ladies reel last season and this showed with the fact that they reached the Champions League Semi-Final stage. She made some crucial saves and was the unsung hero in a very flamboyant team.

Another skill that she has is one that cannot be taught directly. She has reaction quicker than a cat trying to catch a mouse. Yes, her positioning in order to make the save is good, but some shots are fired at goal and she seems to make saves look easy.

With plenty more years still left in her, Spencer is certainly someone who the Blues’ fans will get to know and thoroughly appreciate.
