Usually, it is the trait of brutality that gets young defenders the headlines, but in Josh Martin’s case, it is all about the brains.
Having been at the club since he was 9 years old, the culture of the club has been embedded within him. He has been described in the past as having an exemplary attitude and the everlasting smile he has shows how passionate he is for the game.
At the U21 age group, the level that Martin has played at since 2014, players often have the skill but have a severe lack of understanding in terms of the positioning needed.
Despite looking like a weedy teenager, Martin has the awareness to always be in the right position. He reads the game as well as anyone that I have seen at this level. This inbuilt talent cannot be taught and so to have this is a real gift.
Josh is certainly one to look out for. His physicality will need a vast improvement but this comes with age as well as experience. I have the confidence that he will do well at the club in future years.
