Alex Wendell signed from Bristol City last year for one year but as of yesterday, this contract has been extended. The first game of the 2016 FA Women’s Super League season is at the end of this month, so the signing comes at a welcomed time. The first match is against title hopefuls Liverpool Ladies.

Having lost many key players in this off season, it will be tough for Birmingham Ladies to push on from last season’s disappointment. Last season, they were on the brink of relegation, even with the likes of Spencer, Carney and Potter. However, Spencer and Carney have both left for bigger things and this leaves us a bit scarce on experience.

Alex Wendell is a 25 year old midfielder and this is perfect to fill the hole that Carney has left. She works very hard on the pitch, closing down players and tracking back. This work ethic is something that has gone down well with David Parker, the Birmingham City Ladies manager.

She has the quality to really dictate games. Grabbing them by the scruff of the neck and really spurring players on around her. She is a great signing for the club and I am sure she will push everyone to regain a bit of confidence after last year.

David Parker also goes on to say on the official Birmingham Ladies site, that she is very versatile. This is a dream for a manager because injuries are always sustained and due to the lack of finance, we cannot afford to have cover for every position. Therefore to have a player who can cover spaces in the squad is very valuable and it is something that we cannot take for granted.
