Alex Jones has had quite a bizarre season so far. It had started off with a lot of promise. He was bossing the U21 league with both goals and outstanding patterns of play between himself and Popa. Everything was looking promising for the young man, until a failed move to the A League meant a wasted month for the youngster. He is back at square one, or you would have thought.

Fortunately for Jones, he has been given a bit of hope due to the lack of fit strikers that we currently have in the squad. No sooner has he touched back on Birmingham soil, he may have an opportunity for the first team, come tomorrow.

Donaldson will start and I will be surprised if anyone joins him up top so the likelihood of Jones starting is very slim. However, for a man who looked to be down and out, the chance to come and be part of the first team squad is definitely a huge slice of fortune. But I believe he has all the capabilities to succeed as a first team player.

What I like about Jones is that he is very attack minded but he isn’t greedy. A lot of strikers who are capable of beating a man often lose sight of other team mates in their bid to be a match winner. However, Jones is very direct in his dribbles however he looks to link up well with others around him. He has the awareness to do this which most youngsters don’t have.

With no other recognised striker fit enough to be on the bench, some may be worried that we won’t be able to improve our scoring records. But I actually think Jones could push for a starting spot towards the end of the season; I think he is that good. He is very composed when finishing but he also has different types of finishing in his locker.

I have seen him score headers; both powerful and placed ones, left footed shots, right footed shots, trick shots. You name it, he will have scored it. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a 1v1 or he has to beat 8 players, he often finds the back of the net or if not, he retains the ball.

Through others misfortunes, he has got a chance. Now, he needs to watch and learn in order to really grasp the experience. He is more than capable to come on and make a difference.
