A Point Is A Point

Whenever we don’t win a game against a lesser opposition, no disrespect to Rotherham, then our fans often try and explain why that has been the case usually in the form of the blame game. Now look, 10 men for a large section of the second half meant that Rotherham scrapped for their lives.

I am of the opinion that Rotherham’s organisation gained them the point rather than the fact that we lost the two points. Even when they had eleven players on the pitch, the overall set-up that they went with was to frustrate us. They had 10 players behind the ball for a lot of the game which meant that it was hard to find space. This space is often exploited by Maghoma and Toral but the space just wasn’t available today which meant a lot of sidewards passing from our men.

They defended in packs and did work hard when they didn’t have the ball but this meant that no gaps were to be found. Despite this, I would have liked to see us get more overlaps from the fullbacks, in particular Shotton who I believe has a really good cross on him. This may have suited Donaldson as he was better aerially than their centre backs.

Earlier this week, I highlighted Lee Camp as their one to watch. This was due to the fact that he has the ability to be a great goalkeeper but it is his communication and experience that sets him apart. He is always talking and adjudicating from the back. This means that all of the defence know exactly what to do and how they are supposed to do it.

As play-off contenders, we were the big dogs coming against the underdogs who had the support of their fans. They played for a point and ultimately, they got what they wanted. They were happy to sit and hit us on the breaks due to their fairly pacey striker against Robinson and Morrison. But overall, they never looked like scoring but I don’t believe this to be their game plan.

Yes, we could have taken our chances and we probably should have pressed higher when we had the one man or even two man advantage. I would have liked to see a second striker play next to, not behind Donaldson. This would have given us more options and a better attacking threat. Instead, Donaldson was left isolated up top which caused great frustration.
