After claiming the award of top goal scorer for Birmingham City last season can Lee Novak continue the scoring form he showed in his début season?

In May 2013 Novak became a Birmingham City player and with a record showing he can score at League One and Championship level there was a positive feeling from fans that they may have a goal scorer to cheer for. Novak was brought in as a replacement for the then departing Marlon King. As shown Novak was not able to replicate the goal scoring form of previous strikers the club have had such as Kevin Phillips. However he brought something missing from the strike force until his arrival. Work rate.

Lee Novak now aged 25 provided the legs for the older more experienced Zigic who needed a work horse around him to get the best from him. However that is a different question entirely about getting the best from the out of contract cult hero Zigic. Novak’s work rate down the left wing and his work ethic to tracking back helped him win over the crowd. Novak always had multiple shots from different angles and distances this has caused issues for opposition players. This also helped create space and chances for team mates around him.

Novak is something of question mark for fans as to where he needs to play to be the most effective for the team. Despite this being able to fill in as a lone striker as well as a second striker and as a winger it may be for the team`s best interests as it makes him harder to prepare for. It could be said that this will help Novak kick on from last season`s individual success and have a greater impact in pulling the club up the table.

The number 12 can be a symbol of everything the club needs to be this season: hard working, adaptable and difficult to anticipate. By continuing in the same way he played last season and building on it Lee Novak has the potential to help Birmingham not only survive relegation. This may be a long shot with the state the clubs in but maybe achieve a high finish and outside play off contenders.
