A Good Start Was Crucial

Maximum points from the opening game is always a good thing. With Birmingham City beating Reading last Saturday, it can spur the side on through a confidence boost.

Not only this, but the game also showed character. Reading could and maybe should have won the game or gained a point, but they didn’t. It doesn’t matter if you lose the possession stats or the amount of corners… What matters is the score line!

The Blues’ grinded out a victory despite not playing their best football and the penalty rebound miss by Cox as well as Reading’s rebounded crossbar ‘goal’ showed that we had luck on our side.

Winning at home early doors establishes a fortress mentality so your confidence is high and the opposition come with fear in the eyes. Or as we found out under the Clark era, if you lose a lot at home, it’s tough to regain momentum again.

So, despite a few Bluenoses grumbling about a poor performance, I can only see positives after the game. Yes Gray wasn’t involved much and the defending at times was a bit shambolic, but we still won.
