A Good Point – Should Have Been Three

It is not often that you are disappointed with a point at Turf Moor. But today, Blues could have, and probably should have, took home all three points.

But let`s take a moment to congratulate Gary Rowett and his players on what was a very impressive away display. If Blues could defend set-pieces more astutely, we`d be toasting another win tonight.

Maikel Kieftenbeld looks an absolute class act. Yes, it`s very early in his Blues career, but his positional play and distribution is superb and he looks to be a very good signing.

Clayton Donaldson was a menace throughout and, penalty or not, he was a handful for the Clarets` defence. We can argue until the cows come home about whether the referee was right in awarding the spot-kick, but the challenge from the Burnley defender, who needlessly ran into the challenge like a bull in a china shop, was naive. And last week, a similar situation went against Blues, albeit, the resulting penalty was saved.

Jon Toral took his goal very well and looks a clever player in the hole. And a mention must also go to Stephen Gleeson who put himself about and used the ball very well. The team as a unit played very well.

In his interview on Sky Sports after the game, Burnley boss Sean Dyche said his side ‘dominated’ the game. I am sorry, Sean, but you much have had your eyes closed – or you were watching a different game. In the first half, Blues made Burnley look very average. Dyche’s team passed the ball from side-to-side and lumped long punts into the box. Blues sat back, waited for possession and always looked positive and threatening.

In no way did Burnley dominate the game.

So, the point took Blues to the top of the Championship very temporarily. But it has been a promising start to the season, long may it continue.
