A Fair Price for Ben Foster

Ben Foster has committed his long term future to West Brom after signing a new four year deal with an option for another 12 months.

The keeper has been a big hit with the Baggies winning player of the season several times. Foster initially joined West Brom on loan from Birmingham before completing the switch permanently after Blues were relegated from the Premier League.

The 31 year old joined Blues in 2010 and made 38 appearances for the club, including a brilliant display in the Carling Cup final. Born in Leamington Spa it is no wonder he settled well in the Midlands.

So here is the actual financial break down of Foster for Birmingham. Blues bought the keeper from United for around £6 million, probably a fee far in excess of what he was worth at the time as he hadn`t ever played top flight first team football, other than a wobbly season at Watford.

Following relegation West Brom paid just under £1 million in loan fees for Foster to go and play for them that season, while Blues tried to return to the Premier League. Blues didn`t manage it and Foster made the move permanent for around £4.5 million.

Birmingham did almost make their money back on Foster and with MyHill and Butland in at no 1 afterwards it may not be as bad a business as some would have you believe. Yes, I would have preferred Foster to stay but we were not stolen from with regards to this transfer.
