A Fabb performance

Luke Turner on Fabbrini’s recent display and future chances…

When Diego Fabbrini joined Blues permanently in January for a fee of £1.5m, there was a real sense of excitement and buzz surrounding his arrival.

However, the form of Jon Toral and now Che Adams coupled with a few niggling injuries, has meant that we haven’t really seen too much of the Italian.

Apart from his nine minute cameo against Reading in September, Fabbrini hadn’t featured for Blues in any match since the first game of the season before he replaced Adams in our last fixture.

He was given the best part of half an hour to help Blues find a winner against Blackburn with his creativity and magical feet.

As it happened, Blues scored just a minute after Fabbrini came on which made it a lot easier for him to come into the game and show what he can do.

That’s not to suggest that us fans don’t know what he can do, but we just haven’t seen it enough since he returned to St Andrews.

However, he came on and worked extremely hard to come looking for the ball and, when he found the ball at his feet, was excellent at keeping hold of it and then moving it on again.

The way the ball was just glued to his foot really did remind us of how talented his is and that he still has a part to play for Blues, even if Che Adams is the first choice number 10.

His only real letdown would be his physicality and, at times, his end product. Adams has already shown that he can score goals for Birmingham City and it`s up to Fabbrini to make the most of the minutes he has to knock him off his perch.

I’d be a little surprised to see Diego starting on Friday night but he will surely come into the thinking of Gary Rowett and he has definitely staked a claim.

After a decent pre-season, there were high hopes that this would be a positive season for Fabbrini and that he would be our main go-to player.

It might not have worked out to be that so far this campaign but Fabb looks eager to impress and, let’s be honest, he’s not a bad option to have is he?
