A clean slate for Blues…but will it stay that way?

Over the past week or so, Birmingham City have really let their performances slip, which let’s face it, isn’t like us at all, but there is one important thing we need to remember for next Sunday.

However useless Blues have been against Burton Albion, Nottingham Forest and Rotherham United in the last three games, the teams needs to go into the big derby against Aston Villa next week on a clean slate.

The fact is, if they go into the game mulling over their mistakes from those three games in seven days, they will get walked all over and all the good work that Gary Rowett has done so far this season will be tarnished and that isn’t something we want to see.

As a Blues fan, you expect to see your team performing with passion, aggression and desire. Well against Burton and against Forest there was not a single one of those things on display.

Yes, you could argue that for brief spells in both games there was a little big of hunger but nowhere near as much as we are used to seeing.

In my own opinion, Rowett’s side needs to go into the game like they did against Norwich City. That was a fresh start after the loss to local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers the week before, so it needs to happen again if we are to come out victorious in arguably the biggest fixture outside the top flight of English football.

There is obviously some work that needs doing with the squad over the next week for us to even consider winning the game, let alone having the pride of the Midlands title!

Former Blues manager Steve Bruce has, regrettably, turned things around so far with those ‘noisy’ (yeah they wish) neighbours, but wouldn’t it just be great if his first defeat came against us? It sure would be that little bit sweater.

I can see it now. Remember Rowett’s celebration against Sheffield Wednesday when Lukas Jutkiewicz popped up with a 92nd minute winner…what would he do if something like that happened again?

Would he do a knee slide towards the Tilton? Would he do a group hug in the dugout? Would he stick two fingers up at Bruce? Who cares!! It would just show a lot of character from the whole squad if they came back and performed on the clear slate that needs to be had at the start of next weekend.
