Steve Bruce has confirmed that Blues have made an official approach for 34-year-old Fulham and USA striker Brian McBride.

He also hopes that Chris Sutton might make a surprise return.

Bruce told the official site: ‘We have been in touch with Chris Sutton over the summer and we will see what happens. It is one of those that is ongoing. To be fair to Chris, he has still got a niggling groin injury which he needs to sort out. So we’ll see.’

‘We have also made an enquiry for McBride but at the moment that is all it is. We have got to be patient.’

Do you get that sinking feeling of de-ja-vu?

I thought Blues were going for a young dynamic new set up? We are now told we are in talks for 30-year-old Bolton defender Radhi Jaidi, Chris Sutton and possibly another 34-year-old.

I know you need expereince to go with youth, but come on?

Bruce told Radio Five Live: ‘I think we are three or four players short. We have brought in a few already but we are looking to bolster what we have already got over the next week. We have got eight bids on the table at the moment for various players. Let’s hope one or two come to fruition in the next couple of days.’

He also says that although he won’t say how much money he has to spend but ‘If we do bring in those players, then with the quality we are looking at then I am very, very hopeful that we can bounce back.’
