The Summer Of Change. Will It Prove To Be A Disaster Or Great Decision Making For Blues? Opinion

With four days to go until we kick off the new season against Brentford, supporters will be hoping that this close season of change, in so many areas at Blues, will turn out to be one of correct decision making.

Garry Monk’s tenure is long past and his style, his game philosophy and his proposed summer plans for our club, is now lost forever. This has been replaced by a radical change by the owners, who have decided to play a different way and opted for a ‘Spanish theme’ throughout.

UE CORNELLA, our new ‘sister club’, is just one of the routes we now travel down in relation to possible player recruitment. Pep Clotet and the backroom staff must implement a playing style that is now demanded of them by the owners with, I would imagine, an early degree of success.

New players of Crowley and Sunjic look to herald a new partnership in midfield which does put into doubt the future role that Davis will have, if any, as a regular. Davis is highly rated by fans such as myself and I would urge Clotet to keep him as an integral part of the team. What I don’t want is this player being shipped out to a rival club. We will need him this season in my opinion.

What is really disappointing is the Vassell situation at Blues and the talk of a possible return to Luton Town. This player became an instant hit with us all, with blistering pace and a real danger for opposing defenders. All this came to a devastating halt in our local Villa derby-enter Alan Hutton. Last season we tracked Vassell’s rehab programme with great interest and hoped that this new season would see him take on the missing void left by Adams. Sadly it looks unlikely.

Moving on we now have to with defenders adopting a new playing style under the owner’s instructions which if successful, will be hailed forevermore. Hopefully, players such as Colin will benefit by pressing upfield and allowing his talents to be seen more as an attacking player, likewise Pedersen and the emerging Seddon. This summer of change and the new way forward has divided many supporters with the major issue centred around the defensive ‘new look’.

The Monk exit was a shock, Adams departure was expected but the defensive style is a gamble. Brentford test will be ideal with points up for grabs and new players hopefully making the new-look Blues a success.
