Well it’s signed, sealed, done and dusted. After finally getting round to actually making a bid, Heskey has signed for Wigan for a whopping £5.5 million.

I doubt many fans will be complaining with that!

The 28 year old, misfiring former England international has signed a 3 year contract with the Latics.

Manager Paul Jewell was positively glowing at the capture of Heskey, whether he feels that way come Christmas is anyone’s guess.

‘This is a major coup for Wigan Athletic. I have said all along I want to bring real quality performers into this club, and Emile fits into that category.

‘he is the most high profile signing this club has ever made, but I’ve not brought him for his reputation, I’ve brought him because I know what he can do on a football field.

‘He’s played over 300 Premiership games, was a mainstay in the Liverpool and England attack for several seasons and has played and scored in both the World Cup and the UEFA Cup.

‘I can understand Steve Bruce not wanting to sell him because he has been a big player for him.

‘But I expect Emile to make a major impact at Wigan because he has the talent, drive and attitude to fit into the team and play a major part in our development. Of that I am convinced.

‘We have been monitoring the situation for a long time as regards his availability, and there were naturally several other clubs interested in a player of his quality.

‘It speaks volumes about how far we have come as a club that we have beaten established Premiership clubs to net a player of his stature, just as he has reached his prime.’

Can’t argue with most of what he says, we all know Emile has the talent and could’ve, should’ve been an amazing player. For £5.5 million Bruce would’ve been lynched if he hadn’t sold him, especially given his impact at Birmingham so far. I can only summise Jewell was talking about his height and weight in terms of stature and being a big player.

I’m also not sure about Heskey coming into his peak, I think he had his peak when playing for Leicester and seems to have gone slowly downhill ever since really.

Oh well we wish him luck, it would be horrifying if he didn’t beat last seasons goal tally this season afterall.
