The third round draw for this year’s EFL Cup will take place on Thursday August 24.

Carabao, as the new three year sponsor’s of the competition, will be holding the draw in Beijing, China at approximately 11.15am local time and that means a completely practical draw time of 4.15am British Standard Time.

The third round draw is unseeded, and the EFL will be hoping it’s not as unorganised as the last two attempts have been so far this season.

Probably more for draw organisers themselves, the EFL have confirmed the first ball draw will be the home side, followed by an away club and importantly this will be repeated 16 times until the full draw is known.

Third round ties will take place in the week beginning September 18 and ball numbers will be allocated following the completion of the round two ties on Wednesday evening.

Speaking to the a spokesperson explained.

‘We understand that not everyone will agree on the timing of this week`s Round Three Draw, but in staging in this way it will give the competition both the maximum exposure in the UK, Chinese and South East Asian markets. This is not only an important factor for the EFL but also our new sponsors Carabao, who, like ourselves, plan to use the growing global appeal of the competition to reach new audiences. Once the logistics have been completed in Beijing, the UK will be waking up and the breakfast media will be able to report and get reaction on the 16 ties that will take place next month, which we feel is an interesting move away from the usual post-game evening draws.’

The cynic would say it creates time for them to get the graphics right and correct any repeat errors that we’ve seen so far.

‘The Round Three draw itself is not being televised live in China or anywhere else but the EFL will be providing full coverage across its Carabao Cup Twitter feed, with news and reaction as it happens. Our decision to go to China is part of a strategic plan to grow the EFL internationally and specifically boost profile and exposure in ASEAN markets. A number of potentially significant meetings are being held around the draw that we envisage will deliver a benefit to all 72 clubs of the EFL.’

‘As part of those meetings the EFL will stage its first summit in Asia, where potential sponsors and investors from the region will gather to be briefed on the wider opportunities the EFL can provide. This will include the showcasing of the new iFollow international streaming platform which successfully launched at the start of the season. We now look forward to this work developing over the course of the next few days and taking further shape in the coming weeks and months.’

Round three now sees Premier League sides in European competition join the competition.

  • Well at least they won’t have a comedy show on TV this time and finally they have reverted to the tried and trusted method.
A difficult tie for us tonight,I did not agree with seeding’s in a cup competition, unfair advantage to the Premier teams who have avoided each other in the second round. It’s an ideal time for the manager to put out all his new additions tonight giving them much needed game time together before we play our next Championship game.AFC Bournemouth are not a team we would have hoped for if facing Premiership opposition, however they have a very good squad and it’s likely many of their players will be rested. They will be expected to win,we have nothing to loose however I would like a Cup run and a repeat of 2011, ( wouldn’t we all ),Championship clubs have made the final before why not this season too.The competition should be treated with more respect after all it’s a major historic Cup the League Cup,also carries with it a route into Europe via the Europa Cup.If we can get past Bournemouth and have a kind draw at home again who knows?
Blues and Villa at home on the same night, amazed the Police didn’t block this.
